Sistah Joyce

Welcomed as another powerful female voice in the male-dominated world of reggae, the Virgin Island’s Sistah Joyce is moving forward with the production of her third full-length album titled Deliver Me.

Busting on to the scene in 2003 with “Haile Africa”, a hit on Caribbean radio, she followed in 2004 with a hit-filled EP and a 15-track debut album called H.Y.P.O.C.R.I.S.Y. Her second full-length album, Freedom Sitee, came in 2006, produced by Ras L.

Both albums were met with widespread critical acclaim and several comparisons to reggae empresses like Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and fellow Virgin Islander Dezarie.

“That debut set [H.Y.P.O.C.R.I.S.Y.] fully showed that this female voice has the talent to take her place in the forefront of roots reggae music, which is reaffirmed by it’s follow-up entitled Freedom Sitee,” according to a review from reggae-vibes.com.

Based on the success of her early releases and high-energy performances, Sistah Joyce spent two and a half years playing festivals and shows in the northeast United States. But being separated from her five children was too much for her, so she returned to Virgin Gorda a year ago, and has been working on her album and preforming locally.

“The vibe of the new album is to keep hope and positiveness alive,” Sistah Joyce said. “The world running real, real, red and this is the time for us to go to our inner self and inner spirit. My whole motto is the dawn of a new era, rude awakening. That’s appealing to all people no matter the race, or creed or religion. It’s time for us to cling to each other and find a solution to move forward.” Describing it as a home-grown, self-reliant production, Sistah Joyce said she has been working with Virgin Gorda producers Marcus Youngblood and Keith “Kitty” Gardner Jr. Sistah Joyce is also coming off a strong performance at Virgin Gorda Festival’s first reggae night, sharing the stage with Jamaica’s Da’Ville and local talent Ritical.

More praise for Sista Joyce:
"She has a pensive, melancholy sound; if Dezarie is Lauryn Hill, then Sistah Joyce is more along the lines of Alicia Keys. H.Y.P.O.C.R.I.C.Y. has a mature roots reggae sound and Sistah Joyce a maternal feel (see her incorporation of children on the fun ska track “R.e.g.g.a.e”) reminiscent of reggae greats Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths."
Reggae Reviews

"Sistah Joyce is on a serious mission for JAH, so look out for this empress in your town."
I Grade Records

"Overall opinion is that "Freedom Sitee" is an adventurous roots album with some real refreshing and surprising sounds."
